If you read my Mental Health MON 8/31 blog entry, you know that I publicly confessed my side-trip to Casey's yesterday morning, in order to buy & consume an order of their biscuits & gravy. I further acknowledged the hazards of this entree for one such as me, who is afflicted by Diabetes Type 2. Not looking for sympathy, but I further reflected that I've been in somewhat of a slump lately, & one of the signs is an increased caloric in-take, particularly of carbs. Finally, I think I acknowledged--but I'm too lazy to go back & check for sure--that my wife would undoubtedly read my post & discover my human frailty. * Just in case you were wondering:
- Yesterday was not a particularly good eating day for me again, for which I take full responsibility.
- Yes, my beloved spouse did take notice, & I was mildly reprimanded when she got home last night. My bribery of take-out Chinese food for supper may have helped tone down the acrimony.
- This morning at the Grace Lutheran Men's Bible Study @ the Orphan Grain Train Warehouse in Norfolk, Doug Trampe, chef extraordinaire, whipped up scrambled eggs, sausage, and, wait for it . . . wait for it . . . you guessed it . . . biscuits & gravy. It would have been downright rude not to indulge. **
** For what it's worth, & I hope Lois is "listening," I limited myself to one helping, i.e., one biscuit smothered, I mean, COVERED in gravy. But I digress.
Down to the Nitty Gritty
Excerpts from Norfolk Daily News (8/27): "Sharpton show axed. Al Sharpton is losing his daily show on MSNBC, with the network saying he'll be downshifted to the weekend. Sharpton's 'Politics Nation' has aired at 5:00p on weeknights for the past 4 yrs at the ratings-challenged news network. MSNBC is in the midst of wholesale changes under NBC News boss Andrew Lack, de-emphasizing its left-leaning programming during the daytime hours in favor of more news shows." [DEPT. of IMAGINARY CONVERSATIONS: Andrew Lack: "Do you think our ongoing drop in ratings has anything to do w/shows like Al Sharpton's?" Staff member: "Well, it's hard to believe, but maybe we should roll it back a little just to see what happens." Sharpton spokesperson: "Racists!"]
Also from NDN (8/28): "Clinton likens GOP's views to those held by terrorists. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday drew parallels between terrorist organizations & the field of Republican candidates for president when it comes to their views on women, telling an Ohio audience her potential GOP rival were pushing 'out-of-date' policies.
"'Now extreme views about women? We expect that from some of the terrorist groups. We expect that from people who don't want to live in the modern world,' Clinton said."
[DEPT. of IMAGINARY NEWS CONFERENCES: Reporter: Mrs. Clinton, wouldn't you say that your position on abortion is actually closer to views held by terrorists, given that 50% of unborn children are women?" She-who-shall-not-be-named: "Fetuses! They're fetuses! They're NOT women. They're FETUSES!]
Also from NDN, Late Laughs (TV Week 8/28), shameless joke stealing from Jimmy Fallon: "As Hillary Clinton's poll numbers continue to slide, the movement to convince Joe Biden to run for president has been gaining steam. Which might sound like a joke, but the pay-per-view on a Biden/Trump debate would solve the national debt crisis."
Excerpts from Omaha World Herald (8/14): "Fidel Castro says U.S owes hefty debt to Cuba. Fidel Castro marked his 89th birthday with a newspaper column Thursday repeating assertions that the U.S. owes socialist Cuba 'numerous millions of dollars' for damages caused by its decades-long embargo. The brief essay came a day before a historic moment in U.S.-Cuba relations: Secretary of State John Kerry is to raise the Stars & Stripes over a restored U.S. Embassy in Havana, though the economic embargo legally remains in place." [Because nothing pacifies a dictator like signing a treaty with him that pretty much gives him everything but the kitchen sink while gaining us, let's see . . . oh, yeah, nothing.]
Also from OWH (8/15): "New to-do over 1951 teacher pledge law. A legal showdown is brewing over a decades-old Nebraska law that requires teachers to pledge a belief in American ideals & teach students to appreciate the country's founding principles. An attorney for the ACLU of Nebraska sent a letter Friday to the Hastings Public Schools warning them to stop enforcing the law . . .
"Neb. Rev. Stat. 79-8,108 requires that all Nebraska public school teachers & other employees paid from public school funds sign a pledge. The pledge calls for teachers to acknowledge their duty to 'inculcate in the hearts & minds of all pupils love & devotion to the policies & institutions that have made American the finest country in the world. Teachers must pledge that they 'believe in the U.S.A. as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed." [Because the last thing we need is a bunch of teachers trying to influence our Nebraska children to develop a sense of patriotism. The next thing you know, the ACLU will be challenging the rights of our teachers to bring a Bible to school. Wait . . . what?]
