Thoughts on Polygamy, Sanctuary . . . & Why Parade Magazine Drives Me Crazy

Excerpts from the Norfolk Daily News (some are a little dated):

(5/30) "Obamas consider life after the White House . . . Obama has talked about returning to teaching . . . (He once taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago.)" [A spokesperson for the U of C literature dept. welcomed the idea of President Obama teaching constitutional law under the course heading, "The Constitution as Fiction."]

(6/4) "Casting apology. "Cameron Crowe has apologized for offending anyone over his casting of Emma Stone in a partially Asian-partially Hawaiian role in his film
Aloha.'" [In a related story, the late Gene Roddenberry issued an apology for casting Michael Dorn in the Klingon role of Worf in "Star Wars: The Next Generation."]

(7/2) "Polygamous Montana trio apply for wedding license. A Montana man said Wednesday that he was inspired by last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage to apply for a marriage license so that he can legally wed his 2nd wife." [Knock me over with a feather.]

(7/7) "Sanctuary policy criticized as suspect charged with murder. (San Francisco) The killing of a woman at a sightseeing pier has brought criticism down on this city because the Mexican man under arrest was in the U.S. illegally, had been deported 5 X & was out on the streets after S.F. officials disregarded a request from immigration authorities to keep him locked up. S.F. Francisco is one of dozens of cities & counties across the country that do not fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The city goes so far as to promote itself as a 'sanctuary' for people in the country illegally." [I'm wondering how San Francisco's tourism czar works this into their promotional literature? SEE related USA excerpt below.]

Excerpts from Omaha World Herald:

(7/9) "Medicare to cover end-of-life counseling. Medicare said Wednesday that it plans to pay doctors to counsel patients about end-of-life care, the same idea that sparked accusations of 'death panels' & fanned a political furor around President Obama's health care law six years ago . . . It suggests that what many doctors regard as a common-sense option is no longer seen by the Obama administration as politically toxic." [And what many at the time called an obvious lie was . . . an obvious lie.]

(7/10) "Kerry says U.S. won't wait 'forever' for agreement." [In a private conversation with senior Iranian diplomats, Kerry assured them, "Yes, we will."]

Excerpt from Parade Magazine (somewhat dated):

(5/10) "How I Got Here. Jane Fonda. The unstoppable, 70-something actress-exercise guru, starring in an edgy new Netflix comedy, refuses to rest on her (two) Oscars." [Yes, that would  be the same Jane Fonda who visited Hanoi during the Vietnam War, posed on an anti-aircraft gun, even while our POW's were imprisoned & being tortured in the Hanoi Hilton, & has never--to the best of my knowledge--apologized, & who continues to be celebrated by Hollywood, & why I continue to have a love-hate relationship with this magazine. It does me no good to boycott the magazine, because it comes with my Sunday newspaper no matter what, but I do boycott her movies & t.v. shows. I realize that this could be hypocritical on my part.]

Excerpts from USA Today:

(7/8) "Deadline for Iran nuke deal delayed again. Negotiators now have until Friday to reach an agreement." [Headline from USA Today, 7/8/2025, "Deadline for Iran nuke deal delayed again."]

(7/8) From Twitter @ USATOPINION re: S.F. is a "sanctuary city. It has a law that prevents city employees from assisting federal immigration enforcement. "Failure to enforce existing immigration laws is the problem Sanctuary policies aren't to blame; they simply allocate limited resources." (@MiaoReport) [Dept. of Imaginary Conversations: Police Sergeant: "Why is this man under arrest?" Detective: "He murdered a woman on a sightseeing pier. We have witnesses, a confession, & his fingerprints on a gun." Sergeant: "According to his paperwork, he's in the U.S. illegally." Detective. "So?" Sergeant: "Turn him loose. We don't have enough money to put savage murderers in jail, especially those who brutally murder our own citizens in broad daylight. Now quit wasting our limited resources & go track down some real criminals."] "The Answer on Immigration lies somewhere between Donald Trump's hate speech & San Francisco's sanctuary law." (@TheNashvillian) [Of course, because Donald Trump's hate speech incites those in the US illegally to commit murder.]
