COVID
"The advent of the COVID vaccines is one of the marvels of our time. Yet the message that vaccine-hesitant Americans are getting from the media and public-health officials is that vaccines are highly risky, and even if you take that risk, you can’t go back to your pre-pandemic lives. This is perverse. The COVID-19 vaccines available to Americans — which, as of this writing, are just the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines — are safe. People have reactions to them, of course. People have reactions to all kinds of vaccines, from flu shots to tetanus shots. Those who are vaccinated may experience muscle aches and sore arms, fatigue, chills, slight fever, headaches, and dizziness. These reactions usually pass in a day or two, without any treatment. It’s a small and brief inconvenience for the benefit of no longer being at risk to being seriously ill with COVID-19." The Editors, National Review Online
CLIMATE CHANGE
"Biden announced a commitment to cut U.S. emissions in half from 2005 levels by 2030. This was greeted by huzzahs from elite opinion-makers, but the commitment, and the entire effort, is misbegotten. A key theory driving it is that if the U.S. cuts its emissions, everyone else around the world will as well, preserving Earth as we know it. But even well-intentioned countries are liable to miss, or to manipulate, their climate targets, whatever they say. And not all countries are well-intentioned.
"Consider China, which the Biden administration has been desperate to get on board. Amazingly enough, climate envoy John Kerry was the first Biden official to visit China, signaling that climate change is more important to the administration than China’s threatening behavior toward Taiwan, its aggression in the South China Sea, its suppression of the Uyghurs, its predatory trade practices or its theft of intellectual property." "America's national parks are treasures to behold. Or at least most of us think so. Here are one-star reviews from tourists who beg to differ.
> SEQUOIA. There are bugs & stuff, & they will bite you on your face.
> YELLOWSTONE. It's like a bigger version of Central Park, only with bears.
> YOSEMITE. Trees block views, & too many gray rocks.
> GRAND CANYON. A hole. A very, very large hole.
> ISLE ROYALE. No cell service & terrible Wi-Fi.
> ARCHES. Narcissistic, selfish people posed right in front of the arch for their personal photo."
