TODAY'S PROVERB FROM THE LIVING BIBLE

"Keep away from angry, short-tempered men, lest you learn to be like them & endanger your son." (22:24-25)

HELP ME

"Help me to understand that only a few things really are necessary in life. And when you get right down to it, only one:  to sit at Your feet . . . listening . . . looking into Your eyes . . . and loving You." Ken Gire, Men's Devotional Bible

A NEW SONG

"God wants us to sing about what He has done. His right arm, His only begotten Son, has won the victory over sin, futility, the devil & all things that confuse us, break homes & give us sorrow. The new song is Christ's resurrection from the dead. He died with our sin & rose without it. He has done marvelous things, miraculous things, which we see by faith." Mark Preus, The Lutheran Witness, Feb. 2021

TODAY'S HYMN

Love in Christ Is Strong & Living, LW 376

Love in Christ is strong & living, Binding faithful hearts in one; Love in Christ is true & giving. May His will in us be done.

Love is patient & forbearing, Clothed in Christ's humility, Gentle, selfless, kind, & caring, Reaching out in charity.

Love in Christ abides forever, Fainting not when ills attend; Love, forgiving & forgiven, Shall endure until life's end.

WHAT I'M READING

I finished reading "The Flood," by Alfred Rehwinkel. I read it quite a few years ago. It's got a 1952 copyright date, to it's a little bit dated, but it still presents compelling evidence for the Noachic Flood. I wholeheartedly accept the Biblical account.

I'm back to Kindle. I started reading "The General vs. the President:  MacArthur & Truman at the Brink of Nuclear War," by H.W. Brands.

"Communist China is the most villainous government since the Third Reich. It is committing actual genocide against the Uyghurs. It organ harvests Falun Gong and other political prisoners who are killed to fill orders in the transplant black market. Its social-credit system targets Christians and others who act in ways of which the regime disapproves. It illegally occupies Tibet and is committing cultural genocide against Tibetan Buddhism. It has crushed freedom in Hong Kong. It threatens Taiwan. It steals intellectual property on a massive scale. The list goes on and on.

But none of that matters much to Biden’s climate czar John Kerry. He wants to make a global-warming deal so badly that all of the above-related evil can’t be allowed to get in the way of China agreeing to reduce carbon emissions." Wesley Smith, National Review Online

K-12 HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS

"The Nebraska Dept. of Education (NDE) recently released a first draft of K-12 Health Standards. These standards are meant to guide curriculum for all NE schools, including public & non-public schools. The Health Standards are a deeply flawed, ideologically driven document. Should such standards be adopted by schools, children will be placed in peril, many educators will find their professional judgment & conscience under attack, & the culture will move toward a further normalization of child sexualization. Read the proposed Health Standards & take special note of the "Human Growth & Development" section in each grade. Here are a few highlights.

* In Kindergarten, students will "discuss different kinds of family structures" (e.g. single parent, blended, intergenerational, cohabitating, adoptive, foster, same-gender, interracial). Note that traditional marriage between a man & woman is not mentioned.

* In 1st grade, students "define gender, gender identity, &  & gender-role stereotypes."

* In 4th grade, students "distinguish between sex assigned at birth & gender identity & explain how they may or may not differ."

* In 8th grade, students would be taught that abortion is "reproductive care" & how to develop a pan to eliminate an unplanned pregnancy.

What can you do?

1. Pray for Christian teachers & staff serving in our public schools, that they may find opportunities to freely share their faith.

2. Double down on your commitment to Christian education education for your own family.

3. Talk about your concern for the new health education stsandards with your friends. Make sure that they are aware of the educational standards being proposed for every public school in Nebraska.

4. The NDE is seeking feedback about these standards. Please take some time to fill out the NDE online survey & speak up for all NE kids!

5. Watch for local Health Education Standards.

THE EQUALITY ACT *

* which is currently before Congress in Washington, D.C.

"The equality Act that is being considered by Congress sounds innocent. All Americans should enjoy equality & the protections of the U.S. Constitution. But in elevating sexual orientation to a protected class, the Equality Act will bring sweeping changes to current laws, to the great detriment of the religious & constitutional freedoms of biblically faithful churches, institutions, Christian schools & individuals.

"In fact, those churches & institutions that are bound by the Word of God to the truth of marriage between a man & a woman could be punished for simply standing on our consistent beliefs. The Equality Act effectively outlaws the words of Christ & our free exercise of religion.

"The Equality Act expands the definition of 'public accommodation' & puts an ultimatum to individuals, religious non-profits, food banks, schools, charities, adoption agencies:  'Change your faith-based practices or face government punishment.'"

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1. Treat all people with kindness & respect ("You shall love your neighbor as yourself" Mark 12:31).

2. Become informed about the Equality Act & the issues of gender dysphoria.

3. Consider your role as Christian citizens & make your voice known to your elected officials Our friends at Association of Christian Schools International (ASCI) have created a simple web tool to allow you to reach out to your congressperson.

4. Pray for our officials, government, & the church in these challenging days.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS

Last week I posted about problems with our thermostat, which resulted in the air conditioning running all night. The good news? The thermostat is OK. The bad news? We had to get a new furnace.

THE END OF AN ERA

It was our weekend to attend musicals. Yesterday afternoon we watched Bentley's musical at Christ Lutheran School. On FRI evening we watched Hadley's musical at Trinity Lutheran. Since she's a 5th grader & will be headed to middle school next year, this was the last musical or concert that we will attend at Trinity. We've been attending musicals & concerts there since Brianna was in pre-school. Yes, we were a little sad.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

Last night we watched the last episode of Season 13--the current season--of Heartland. That's right. We've watched 13 full seasons. And now we have to wait until next month before we can start watching the new season, Season 14. Bummer.

PRAYER

"When you stop to collect your thoughts during the day, that tiny break presents more than a chance to rest or reflect. It is an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to 'bring to your remembrance all that [Christ has] said to you' (John 14:26). Many Christians say quick prayers of 'Thanks!' 'Help!' & 'Mercy!' at unscheduled breaks, but even a minute is enough time to incorporate what Christ says into our daily lives. Return to the Word by asking, 'How is God connected to my concerns?' Collect your thoughts & apply God's promise to your daily life in specific terms." Mary Moerbe, The LutheranWitness, Feb. 2021

Yet the message that vaccine-hesitant Americans are getting from the media and public-health officials is that vaccines are highly risky, and even if you take that risk, you can’t go back to your pre-pandemic lives. This is perverse. The COVID-19 vaccines available to Americans — which, as of this writing, are just the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines — are safe. People have reactions to them, of course. People have reactions to all kinds of vaccines, from flu shots to tetanus shots. Those who are vaccinated may experience muscle aches and sore arms, fatigue, chills, slight fever, headaches, and dizziness. These reactions usually pass in a day or two, without any treatment. It’s a small and brief inconvenience for the benefit of no longer being at risk to being seriously ill with COVID-19." The Editors, National Review Online

CLIMATE CHANGE

"Biden announced a commitment to cut U.S. emissions in half from 2005 levels by 2030. This was greeted by huzzahs from elite opinion-makers, but the commitment, and the entire effort, is misbegotten. A key theory driving it is that if the U.S. cuts its emissions, everyone else around the world will as well, preserving Earth as we know it. But even well-intentioned countries are liable to miss, or to manipulate, their climate targets, whatever they say. And not all countries are well-intentioned.

"Consider China, which the Biden administration has been desperate to get on board. Amazingly enough, climate envoy John Kerry was the first Biden official to visit China, signaling that climate change is more important to the administration than China’s threatening behavior toward Taiwan, its aggression in the South China Sea, its suppression of the Uyghurs, its predatory trade practices or its theft of intellectual property."  Rich Lowry, NRO

GUN CONTROL

"The default position for the president and other progressive politicians seems to be to call for more gun control laws. "If a political leader can come up with a law that will reverse the cultural rot that has diminished life's value, I will enthusiastically endorse it. In the interim there needs to be a greater emphasis on people with mental health problems and in efforts that keep firearms from them. LECKBAND TEMP CHALLENGE

We woke up to snow this morning. In fact, it's snowing right now. We're only supposed to get an inch or so. It reminds me of a blizzard we had in April, 1997. I was staying in a house on Benjamin Ave., while the rest of the family was still in Hawaii. When I got home that evening, there were at least a dozen fat robins in the garage. Somehow they had squeezed underneath the garage door to escape the cold & wind. I had no idea what to do, so I just let them alone. The next morning they had all frozen to death. I had to use a snow shovel to scoop them out of the garage. It was still snowing so hard & the streets were so slick that schools were cancelled. Anyway, I decided that a temp challenge was apropos this morning, so here goes. Results based on weather.com at 6:59a. (CDT)

SIN

"Sin also affects our broken & fallen relationship with God. Sin is also about idolatry, that is, holding ourselves or things higher than God. In other words, when we sin, we are playing God. Therefore, when the devil approached Eve in the garden, he said, 'You can be like God.' And Eve began to play 'God' as she saw the tree as good for food, pleasant to the eyes & able to make one wise. The devil does not simply seek to make you do bad & immoral things; he also wants you to despair in your sin, fall into selfishness & pride, & not trust in God above all things He wants you to forget the Gospel of the forgiveness sins."  Rev. John Dreyer, The Lutheran Witness

COMEDY

"If you find yourself unable to laugh at something, unable to find anything worthy of satire — especially in a politician like Joe Biden — you may be blinded by your own worldview. A president who has been in politics for five decades promising hope and change. A politician who campaigned against the abuses of the Trump administration and then, once elected, did the very things his party once decried. A president heralded as a return to normalcy who is now proposing ideas that threaten our norms and institutions at a far more fundamental level than Trump ever did . . .

"The Left often argues that comedy should “punch up” and “speak truth to power.” Who’s more powerful than the president of the United States? Or a Democrat-controlled Congress pitching increasingly unhinged ideas that threaten to undermine our democracy? Or a leftist movement that has taken over corporations, sports leagues, corporate America, and schools from kindergarten to college? If the point of comedy is to make some kind of moral point with every joke, well, comedians like Samantha Bee are quickly going to find that they have simply become defenders of the establishment after all.

"Bee’s comment that Biden isn’t really a worthy target just reeks of desperately needing your audience to agree with you. It’s also just obviously false; hypocrisy is ripe ground for satire, so politicians are always worthy targets — on the left and the right."  Kyle Smith, National Review Online  I admit. I don't know who Samantha Bee is.

"'Garlic breath test' can tell if you're likely to catch COVID." Drudge

"In a recent statement, CDC director Rochelle Walensky asserts that there have been disproportionate numbers of COVD-19 cases and deaths in communities of color. She claims that the disparities were the result not of COVID-19 but rather of racism, which she labels a public-health crisis. Her statement echoes an American Medical Association policy recognizing racism as a public-health threat and similar declarations from 194 state and local government entities. But the director’s statement is inconsistent with the CDC’s current data that show little or no increased incidence of black COVID-19 deaths. At best it reflects outdated data documenting disparities that no longer exist. At worst, it reflects a political agenda in search of a justification. Whichever it is, it suggests that public-health officials, in this case the CDC, have become distracted from their core job."  Joel Zinberg, National Review Online

"But you can tell within the ranks of public health experts, government officials, and a lot of media voices there is a widespread and surprisingly steadfast resistance against saying “we’re winning,” or “the crisis is ending,” or “the pandemic is winding down.” Yes, Michigan is still a mess. Yes, we’re probably going to need regular booster shots. Yes, we’re still not quite there in terms of herd immunity – although remember herd immunity isn’t binary; as more people get vaccinated, the virus has fewer opportunities to spread. With almost a quarter of Americans fully vaccinated, and 40 percent of Americans having at least one dose… we’re getting there.

"The health expert class appears terrified of declaring good news, lest Americans throw all caution to the wind and start holding “let’s cough in each other’s faces” parties. Government officials are reluctant to declare good news, because this would mean giving up some of the far-reaching powers they’ve gained during the crisis – or it would mean acknowledging, as Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer said this week, “policy change alone won’t change the tide.” And some journalists don’t want to acknowledge good news because a sense of crisis is good for ratings, traffic, and readership."  Jim Geraghty, NRO

CLIMATE SCIENCE

"A serious review of policy-related climate science is long overdue. Crusaders will continue to retort that “the science is settled; it is time to act!” But real science is never settled, nor is scientific truth determined by consensus or political diktats. Agreement with observations is the measure of scientific truth. Climate models predict two or three times more warming than has been observed. They have already been falsified. A soon-to-be published book by physicist and New York University professor Steven Koonin, Unsettled, convincingly lays out some of the problems a high-quality review would reveal. There is no climate emergency. Americans should not be stampeded into a disastrous climate crusade. The medieval crusades did far more harm than good, destroying the lives of many decent people of all faiths, and leaving a bitter legacy that complicates international relations and social harmony to this day. A climate crusade that destroys economies and ultimately lives will be as bad, or worse."  Richard Lindzen & William Happer, NRO  This article notes that Lindzen & Happer are scientists.

THE CONSTITUTION

"When Christians met in each other's homes for prayer or Bible study, they had to be careful. Such gatherings were illegal, and the organizers never knew who might inform the authorities. Although that sounds like a scene from the Soviet Union, it actually describes the situation in California under COVID-19 regulations that the Supreme Court blocked last Friday. ORGANIZED RELIGION

"(Ben) Franklin said that true religion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness. As he put it, “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” Franklin didn’t often participate in church services himself, but he saw the benefits to society of citizens doing their best to practice and live virtuous lives and to demand virtue in their government leaders. I’m not saying that you have to embrace a traditional religion to be virtuous or to understand the meaning and purpose of life. But half a century later I can still see the value and order that religion has imparted on our republic throughout our history. Just for the record, I believe the Biblical account of the Flood, & I believe that most of the earth's present geology & geography are the result of it. There you go

MEMORIES

"When we revisit our childhood homes, why do they appear so much smaller than we remember? It's hard to believe it's just that we were little back then." ANSWER: When we were much shorter, our angle of viewing made our surroundings look taller, but our innocence also increased their apparent importance. Everything in the house loomed large in our lives. When we moved out & saw more of the world, visiting our parents in that same house frequently, this impression slowly corrected itself. But if we leave the house when we are young & don't see it again for decades, that old image will have remained & likely clash with reality." For a study that sounds more fun than most, healthy young men ate as much pizza as they could in one sitting--3,000 calories, on average. Their blood sugar didn't climb more than it would after a normal meal, & fat levels were only slightly elevated. Frequent overeating can lead to obesity, diabetes, & other issues, but the odd indulgence likely won't create major metabolic consequences." I AM NOT A PUPPET

"God does not pull all the strings. He counts us as too important for that. To find without seeking, to hear without listening, to say yes without the possibility of saying no is to negate the value of my seeking, my hearing & my participating. I am not a puppet. Nor does He put all the pieces together. He leaves holes; He raises questions. He wants me to ask." John Fischer, Men's Devotional Bible

THE OLD TESTAMENT

"Reading the Old Testament is often confusing & confounding. The people & events recorded therein do not always align with our conception of God. People ask why the God of the Old Testament seems mean & vindictive, while the God of the New Testament is nice & forgiving. But that is not accurate. God loves throughout the Old Testament. He is identified by His work to save His people. He shows unfailing steadfast love & faithfulness to Israel (Ex. 34:6). He loves & forgives His people, even as He has wrath on those who oppose Him & who ignore His commandments . . . Read the Old Testament with faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, who gives life & salvation to all who trust in Him. Read about God & know Him in Jesus." "Humility & reverence for the Lord will make you both wise & honored." (15:33)

MASKS

"Finally, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on May 21, 2020, concluded: "We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid-19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction in a public space is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic."

"Contrary to mainstream media misinformation, the doctors who wrote that report did not later retract anything they wrote. People say they "follow the science." They rarely do. They follow the scientists the media tell them to follow." Dennis Prager, Townhall, 4/6

POLITICAL POTPOURRI

GEORGIA

"Ignore the partisan disinformation. Georgia remains a national leader in voting access and election security." Brad Raffensperger, National Review Online

LIMIT VOTERS?

"Much of the discussion about proposed changes to voting laws backed by many Republicans and generally opposed by Democrats begs the question and simply asserts that having more people vote is, ceteris paribus, a good thing. Why should we believe that? Why shouldn’t we believe the opposite? That the republic would be better served by having fewer — but better — voters?" Kevin Williamson, NRO

MINIMUM WAGE

"These days, as the “Fight for $15” rages on, I wonder how many young people will be robbed of that kind of experience if we price them out of entry-level jobs. Unfortunately, many such jobs don’t add $15 an hour to an employer’s revenue stream, so they’ll simply go away. According to the average estimate of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, a $15 minimum wage will mean 1.4 million fewer jobs in 2025." Stephen Walter, NRO

GUN CONTROL

"The only result of outlawing any particular category of firearms because of their appearance (such as the AR-15 rifle, the most popular sporting rifle in the country) would be to push these killers to use pistols instead, which have proven to be just as deadly.

"Democrats know all of these things, but simply do not care because their real goal is to take as many guns out of as many hands as possible, including, of course, those of law-abiding parents, spouses, business owners and others who depend on being able to arm themselves to protect themselves, their families, and their businesses. Such persistence is not just dumb, it is dangerous." Bob Barr, Townhall

POLITICAL DEBATE

"The left has politicized everything. The right has avoided that tactic, because it's ugly and divisive. But it's too late to put the genie back in the bottle. It's time for mutually assured destruction. There's only one thing worse than having nuclear weapons: unilateral disarmament. Better to establish mutually assured destruction now and put corporate America on notice that, by stepping into the middle of fraught political debate, it risks just as much blowback from the right as from the left." A MORNING PRAYER *

* My Prayer Book

"O God, I pray You also, bless & proper the members of my faith & my friends. Give us a government which rules for the welfare of all. Protect our country, our churches, our homes, our schools, that we may work quietly & enjoy Your blessings in peace. Help us all to remember that our needs will be supplied as long as we rely on You & on Your bountiful mercy. For all things make me thankful; in the name of Jesus. Amen."

TODAY'S PROVERBS FROM THE LIVING BIBLE

"A quick-tempered man start fights; a cool-tempered man tries to stop them." (15:18)

"The Lord hates the thoughts of the wicked but delights in kind words." (15:26)

HIS STORY

"The false notion that the Christian life is one without fear or pain, merely a Good Friday show, is another heresy. No sacrifice, no effort to use our talents to transform this world. A prosperity gospel that eliminates the human unpredictability or deep fear that was present during Jesus' blood-filled via Dolorosa. We witness this phenomenon in (so-called) Christian movies where human choice is stepped through like paint by number footprints, which lead to an altar call ending. Not the passion on the cross, or the profound betrayal Jesus felt on that lonely eve.

"St Paul writes that all of the creation groans for redemption (Rom 8:22) and while the outcome of our dramatic acts might never be fully known, Christ is our example. He is the Logos, which means the living word IN THE FLESH, not a gift shop icon.

"In the darkest night of the soul, Jesus pleaded with his father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) His humanity asks if there is any other way, but then accepts he might never know without a radical acceptance. The rest is His story." Robert Orlando, Townhall, 4/5

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

We got caught up on all our CBS shows, including The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah, which we just started, so what did we do? We started another CBS show. That' right. We started watching The Guardian, starring Simon Baker. [The Mentalist, just to jog your memory.] There are 3 seasons to catch up on, so now we're watching NCIS, NCIS New Orleans, FBI, FBI Most Wanted, Seal Team, Blue Bloods, The Equalizer, & The Guardian. Yes, our pathetic social life revolves around TV. ADDENDUM:  I think we're going to stop watching The Guardian. The pre-occupation with sex-driven episodes is unsettling.

MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY

"If you're prone to depression, you might want to say 'bah humbug' to sugary holiday desserts. A new study from a team of clinical psychologists at the University of Kansas suggests that added sugars can trigger metabolic, inflammatory, & neurobiological processes tied to depressive illness . . . high sugar consumption could result in a perfect storm that adversely affects mental health, according to the researchers." EASTER REVIEW

Although Nathan, Laura, Calvin, & Claire couldn't join us for Easter this year, we were able to Facetime with them on SAT & yesterday. And we had our weekly Zoom mtg with Lois' siblings yesterday. The Worley's were here, & the Broders also joined us. Holy Week services are also a highlight for me, especially the sunrise service [& breakfast at church] on SUN. Easter is all about family, especially God's family. He is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

2021 RESOLUTIONS REVIEW

Time for my monthly New Year's resolutions update. I've got some good news & some bad news.

* At least 8 road trips. We've already gone on 6 road trips--by my definition--this year. Yesterday Lois' siblings reached a consensus on a sibling bash in Sedona, AZ, in Oct. Over Easter weekend Lois made reservations for a cabin in the Black Hills. We'll take 3 of our grandkids there for a "glamping" trip in May. And we're planning to visit Mark [my brother] & Christy in Ventura, IA, the week after we visit Nathan & Laura & the kids over Memorial weekend. Plus, we're going back to CA this summer. Lois is going to join Wanda, her oldest sister, to help at a Joni & Friends camp. I'm going along. I think John, my brother-in-law, & I are going to spend time at their double-wide at Lake Tahoe. Looks like this one is in the bag.

* Give up French fries. I'm managing to make this work. [FULL DISCLOSURE:  I decided to give up tater tots for Lent. I slipped a couple of weeks ago when I finished the tater tots that were in the freezer. There were only 6 left, but a "vow" is a "vow."]

* Get a DNA report from Ancestry.com. I haven't heard from them about the sample I sent in JAN, so I tried to go on-line to find the results, but the website wouldn't accept my log-in information. Looks like I'll have to give them a phone call. [I just hope that Lois & I don't turn out to be 1st cousins.]

* Do my PT exercises at least 3X per week. Not going well, but I resumed pulmonary rehab last week. [Rehab has been closed for some time, due to COVID, but just re-opened.] I'll go there twice/week. Does that count?

* Avoid useless Facebook argument. Going well.

* Add to our National Park & bucket lists. Since the 1st of the year we've visited Everglades in FL & Sequoia, Yosemite, & King's Canyon in CA.

* Lose at least 10 lbs. I really, really, would rather not discuss this one.

CRIMINAL MINDS

"A Nebraska man could face several charges after allegedly driving his friend to a hospital in the bucket of a front-end loader . . . the 32-year-old suspect allegedly stole the huge $75,000 front-end loader & showed up at a Lincoln hospital Friday night with a 40-year-old man riding in the bucket. The man told police he did it because the man was injured . . . Police said that in addition to stealing the machine, the driver was intoxicated & blocked an ambulance bay. Police arrested the man on suspicion of felony theft, fourth-offense driving under the influence & driving with a revoked license." Norfolk Daily News, 3/30

"Loose cow ties up interstate traffic for hows." Drudge Report, 4/5

MOTHERS

"Being a mother doesn't end when our children grow up. We still want to protect them, just as we did the day they were born. But they won't need us in the same ways they did when they were little. That's what growing up means. Children need to be cared for. Adults can take care of themselves--except when they need a little help. But grown children will always need a mother. Not to tell them what to do or, heaven forbid, how to do it. But to listen when they need to talk. And to pray for them day & night. And if they have children, to be a 'nana' for their babies. At the same time, we'll always need our grown-up children to make us laugh & keep us young & fill that place in our heart that only they can fill. We can have a lot of great times together. Who knows? They might even do our laundry." Sharon Randall, Norfolk Daily News, 3/30

CHRIST'S EASTER VICTORY, OUR VICTORY

"From the deepest depths of our hearts we believe that Christ rose from the dead; yet we still have to die. Does that mean that Christ's resurrection is of no significance? Oh, no! Just as Christ died for us & for our guilt upon the cross, so He also, through His resurrection, conquered death for us. Death's power has been shattered. To us who believe in Christ, death no longer holds any power over us. 'The Scriptures have proclaimed that just as one death [on the cross] gobbled up the other death, death has become a laughing stock' (Luther). Although our earthly bodies die, we too will be raised to eternal life. Lord Jesus Christ, who has risen from death, we pray that You will grant to us that which may be a blessing to us! In Your name. Amen."

THOUGHTS FOR EASTER *

* Townhall, 4/4

The King Is Seated on His Throne

After Christ’s crucifixion and burial, the disciples were dejected and fearful. The near-term prospects they faced were daunting. But Christ came for an eternal purpose—to inaugurate the Kingdom of God here on Earth and to call into it those who are His. He promised to build His church, saying even the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. And even now Christ is ruling and reigning in the heavenlies with all the saints who have gone before us.

"Yes, we live in uncertain even troubling times. The Christian consensus prevailing since the American founding seems to have evaporated like the dew before the rising sun. Yet the King is seated on His throne. We trust in Him who loved us and loosed us from our sins in His own precious blood. Never will He leave us or forsake us—even to the end of the age." Frank Wright

Jesus:  The Only One Who Ever Conquered the Grave

"The resurrection is so significant because if it is true, it means all the other claims of Christ are true---that He was the Son of God, that He died for sinners, that He will one day judge us all. Every beat of the human heart is dependent on Jesus. Even the most hard core skeptic draws every breath he draws courtesy of Christ. We all have a vested interest to know what happened on that first Easter morning . . . During these days of great upheaval and uncertainty, what a privilege it is to trust in Jesus Christ, the only one who ever conquered the grave. He is risen. He is risen indeed." Jerry Newcombe

The Power of Easter . . . The Power of Resurrection

"Flowers are springing up, birds are singing, and all around us, we sense that we’re finally crawling out of the gloom of the deadly global pandemic. We have lost loved ones, income, businesses, and education. What seems certain is that we will never truly recover. But is it actually certain? Or is that just today’s headline, and there’s more to the story?

"The power of Easter is the power of resurrection. Resurrection means the triumph of life over death. Because of the miracle of Easter, we have a promise, and the power, of resurrection life . . .

"Today, the message is clear. Jesus is alive. He humiliated Hell, he overpowered the grave, and he caused evil to bow its knee. He took your transgressions and pronounced you forgiven. When all of Hell was laughing, and all of Heaven was weeping, the news changed. Jesus was not dead. He was alive. The tomb is the wrong message and an incomplete headline. No matter how you read the news, or what future you imagine, understand one thing: Sunday is coming. And that same resurrection power is available for you and me today. You and your family have lived through Friday’s news. But Sunday is coming . . .

"At Easter, we don't just celebrate one resurrection from 2000 years ago. We celebrate a resurrection that happens today for all who put their trust in God. We celebrate a resurrection of your relationships, your children’s future, your business, and your hope for a better tomorrow. The resurrection of Jesus is a message that hope is never out of reach for you and your family. God can take any tragedy and turn it into victory, as he did for his Son . . .

"At Christmas we don’t simply say, “that’s nice about the baby.” There’s more to the story. Seeing a cross, we don’t simply say, “that’s nice that Jesus died for our sins.” There’s more to the story. God’s story isn’t over; and that means your story isn’t over either. Easter is a reminder that there’s more to your story than today’s headlines. It might feel like a stormy Friday, but that isn’t the end of the story. Sunday is coming." Jentezen Franklin

The Tomb Is Still Empty

"Because he lives, what Jesus did cannot be undone. If Jesus came out of the tomb, then we can come out of misery. We can come out of depression, anxiety, and fear. We can come out of panic. We can come out of addiction. We can come out of sin, temptation and the very pit of hell if Jesus came out of the tomb.

"Let me remind you of Romans 8:11: “The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, lives inside of you.” Here is a word of the Lord for us this Easter: It's time for us to come out of our tombs. Whatever we may be going through at this very hour, the Spirit of God is calling us out. He’s calling us into a new life. Because the blood of Jesus shed on the cross sealed our past, the empty tomb secures our future. Once again, we are celebrating Jesus’ resurrection in the midst of a COVID-19 pandemic. And while it may be dark outside, the tomb is still empty." Samuel Rodriguez

MY EASTER PRAYER *

* My Prayer Book

Lord Jesus, risen & everliving Savior, with Your people of all ages & races I adore You as my Lord & my God, who has crushed Satan's head, conquered sin & death, & redeemed all people from the forces of evil. Accept my hallelujahs as I rejoice with believers, saints, & angels because You have come forth triumphantly from the grave to live forevermore. I ask You to cleanse my heart from all sinful desires & dwell there with Your eternal peace. I rejoice to know that You have blotted out all my transgressions & reconciled me with Your Father in heaven, that I as a child of His household may seek His face & know that He is full of tender mercies & boundless compassion.

I praise You because of the hope that You have brought to my heart. I need not be afraid of death & dying because there is no condemnation for us who believe in the saving power of Your Cross. To all who are sorrowing let this Easter Day bring the comfort of Your promises & a new joy of expectancy as they look forward to the day when they shall be reunited with their loved ones in the eternal glory of heaven.

I rejoice today because I know that Your Church shall go on from victory to victory, receiving strength from Your almighty hand. Even the gates of hell shall not prevail against Your Church. Accept my vows of allegiance this day as I dedicate myself anew to Your service.

Take full possession of my heart, remove all sin, scatter all doubts, drive away all worries. Let Your Spirit set aglow in me a love that will not die. Increase in me day after day the desire to follow You to whatever place You shall lead me, until I stand before Your Throne to behold Your glory as the risen Lord, & praise You with saints & angels with an undying & perfect love. Hallelujah. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR EASTER *

* Lutheran Book of Prayer

O almighty & eternal God, who through the death of Your Son has destroyed sin & death, & by His rising to life again restored innocence & everlasting life, that being delivered from the power of the devil, I might live under You in Your kingdom, grant that I may be forever comforted by true faith in the resurrection of Your dear Son. Do not let the thought of death fill my heart with terror, but give me the blessed assurance that, just as You raised Christ from the dead, I will not remain in the grave but will rise again at the end of days. And when, by Your grace, I have finished my course, let Christ' resurrection be for me a sure pledge that an inheritnce that does not fade is reserved for me in heaven. While I live, guide me with Your holy counsel, & when I die, give me the crown of life, that with all the holy angels & the elect I may praise & glorify You, world without end. Amen.
