whimsical WED special THU edition
WED Whimsy . . . on THU
From Omaha World Herald (9/1): "Chipotle focus on kids in latest giveaway . . . " [Chipotle is giving away WHAT?!]KUDO's to Lincoln Lutheran Middle-Senior High School
I was privileged to attend Grandparents Day at Lincoln Lutheran Middle-High School this afternoon from 1:30-3:15. My grand-daughter Brianna is a 7th grader . . . Not too many staff left from my regime. [I served from 1980-1993; principal from 1987-1993...this was when Lincoln Lutheran was a junior high, grades 7-9.] If memory serves me correctly, these would include Scott Ernstmeyer, Executive Director, who was a student of mine; Sue Ziegler, whom I hired as a Spanish teacher & VB coach; Lyle Ziems whom we called to teach science & math & do some coaching. [Hey, Mr. Ziems! Remember the Mr. T Award?]. Then there are two people on staff who served with me a "few" years ago at LHNE in Norfolk Julie [sorry--can't remember your last name], who taught home ec & Joel Brase, who taught math & did some coaching. I think he's assistant principal at LL.I got to visit with some former school parents, one of whom was also on my last Board at LL before I accepted the call to leave for the Lutheran High School of Hawaii in 1993. I was also privileged to sit by Don Duitsman--now retired--who served w/me at LL. I considered Don to be a mentor. Chapel was led by Bob Ziegler, Executive for Lutheran Schools & Youth in the Nebraska District of the LCMS. As such, he is recognized by the NE DOE as the superintendent of Lutheran schools in Nebraska. I got to sit in chapel w/my grand-daughter . . . All in all a very special day! Brought back a lot of great memories.
Criminal Minds
OWH (9/3): "Inmate set for release flees from courthouse. Authorities in North Platte, NE, were searching FRI for a 42-yr-old inmate w/just a few hours left on his sentence who stole a car & fled from the county courthouse . . . " [Dude, if you're reading my blog, go back & read the highlighted portion of this excerpt.]
There Is No Place Like . . .
Lutheran High Northeast (Norfolk, NE)
OWH 'College FB Special' (8/28): "Offensive Lineman . . . Ryan Freudenburg, So. 6'5", 315 lb. Moved from tackle to guard in spring practice." [I was Ryan's principal . . . I think I was his Grade 11 Doctrine teacher for one semester, too. Couldn't ask for a young man of higher Christian character . . . ditto his parents & family!]Orphan Grain Train (Norfolk, NE)
Norfolk Daily News (8/29): "Orphan Grain Train's chapel put to good use. The congregation of St. John's Lutheran Church (Pilger) here has been holding worship services for the past two years in a mobile chapel provided by OGT of Norfolk. Regular weekly services have taken place in the 14'-by-70' chapel after a 6/16/14, tornado destroyed both the Pilger church & parsonage. Within two months of the church's demolition, the Rev. Ray Wilke, director of the OGT, sprang into action, said Mike Widhalm, logistics director for the ministry . . . Previously OGT had provided a portable chapel for a church in Greensburg, KS, in similar circumstances. That chapel subsequently found a permanent home in Minot, ND . . . " [I am privileged to serve as volunteer correspondent for OGT. I write a weekly devotional for the Headliner, which is emailed to our many national branch stations; also a longer devotional that we use for our weekly staff devotions. I'm not sure that I've ever worked w/a staff & leadership who--on a daily basis--demonstrate their servant hearts for the needy people of the world whom Christ has called us to deliver His mercy & grace.]
Food for Thought
OWH (9/6): "Common nutrition myths debunked . . . Quinoa is super high in protein . . . " [I did NOT bother to read the article, since I make it my common practice to avoid foods that look like the products that Lawnco spreads on my lawn . . . I also couldn't help but notice that quinoa * was noticeably absent from the organic exhibitions in the 4H/FAA building at the Nebraska State Fair.]* According to dictionary.com, KEEN-wah or KEE-noh-uh.
Lincoln Journal Star (7/26): "At the Oyamel Cocina Mexicana in Washington, metal butterfly mobiles hang from the ceiling & bugs are on the menu. The tacos are filled w/thumb-sized roasted grasshoppers, a delicacy head chef Colin King cooks in tequila & chipotle puree & serves w/shallots. 'There's a lot of instances when people try them for the first time where, if they can get over the mental aspect of it, then they end up really liking them,' King said, 'I know I went through that when I first tried them.'
"Connoisseurs of edible insects say more & more people are coming to like such dishes which represent an untapped source of environmentally sustainable protein. And the industry is getting organized to push for further consumer--& government--acceptance." [My first thought was that this has millennials written all over it. My suspicions were confirmed when I saw this next story & its location.]
OWH (8/29): "Cricket Craze: Tech workers chow down on crunch new snack. {San Jose, CA} For Bay Area techies attuned to the latest trends, kale is no longer cutting it & quinoa is passe'. Instead, many are opting for a 6-legged snack. In startup offices around the region, people are munching on crickets . . . " [FYI . . . I did NOT see crickets-on-a-stick at the NE State Fair.]
Political Whimsy
OWH (9/2): "Watchdog gives high marks to Clinton Foundation. A charity watchdog with an ongoing relationship w/the Clinton Foundation gave the former first family's nonprofit high marks THU after an evaluation prompted by heightened interest in the organization. The Clinton Foundation received four out of four stars--the highest rating that Charity Navigator gives after a close look at a charity's finances. The report was not intended to reflect whether 'She-Who-Keeps-Lying-to-Cover-Her-Most-Recent-Lies' kept donors to her family's foundation at appropriate arm's length or provided favored access as secretary of state . . . Charity Navigator's president, Michael Thatcher, told the AP that the Clinton campaign did not influence the rating."- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dept. of Related News stories: "Watchdog gives high marks to Cornhusker State blog.
A blogging watchdog group with an alleged, ongoing relationship w/the Leckband Cornhusker State blog gave this blog high marks WED after an evaluation prompted by heightened interest in the blog. The blog received four out of four stars--the highest rating that BLOGINATOR gives after a close look at a blog's quality . . . a spokesperson for BLOGINATOR'S Board of Director's [Bentley Broders, Brianna & Hadley Worley, Calvin Leckband], told blogger.com that the author & publisher of the Leckband Cornhusker State Blog did not influence the rating."- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
NDN Late Laughs from TV Week (9/2): "Conan: According to Forbes magazine, in the past year Taylor Swift has earned $170 million. When she heard that, Hillary Clinton said: 'I didn't know she gave speeches.'" [This Conan guy should be working for me, don't you think?]
OWH (9/6): "U.S. wants to know extent of Russian meddling. U.S. intelligence & law enforcement agencies are investigating what they see as a broad covert Russian operation to sow public distrust in the coming presidential election & in U.S. political institutions intelligence & congressional officials . . . " [Hey! That's OUR job, said the heads of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, & CNN!]
