Confirmation + Laura Ingalls Wilder + Shameless Joke-Stealing + Thoughts for Today

Political Potpourri

I've been watching snippets from the Judge Cavanaugh hearings over the past few days. I'm struck by how one side continues to ask him questions that they know he can't answer. This is especially ironic, given that this side has pretty much declared that they are NOT going to vote for his confirmation, regardless of his answers. I resolved to quit watching. The obvious posturing by the one side was getting old.

From "Award's name change sparks debate," column by Laura Marlane, Omaha World Herald (8/5):  "The Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, recently made a controversial decision to rename the Laura Ingalls Award to the Children's Literature Legacy Award . . . Her works reflect dated cultural attitudes toward Indigenous people & people of color that contradict modern acceptance, celebration, & understanding of diverse communities . . .
"It is certainly a slippery slope to judge the past using today's standards, & begs the question of where to draw the line. Perhaps, whether or not you agree w/the decision to rename this award, these conversations can provide an opportunity for us to look at an issue from a different angle, which is ironically one of the reasons we read in the first place. Re-examining formerly held beliefs may land us right back where we started, but then again, it might . help us find common ground . . . "

Dept. of Shameless Joke Stealing

From Reader's Digest (June 2018):  "WebMd is updating its server because of a virus. Well, they think it was a virus, but it could also be malaria, kidney failure, a heart murmur, gallstones, or possibly appendicitis."

Wit & Wisdom of Cal Thomas *

* One of my 2 most favorite partisan pundits

From column in Norfolk Daily News (8/1):  "The support the president is receiving isn't just about him. It appears to stem from a sense of gratitude from people who have been ignored by many politicians & now believe they have a champion who listens to & speaks for them. Is he a perfect champion? Of course not. What politician, what human, is perfect? But Trump supporters believe his policies are far better than those advocated by HC & the Democratic Party, which seems to be trending more socialist every day.
"People who embrace socialism after its demonstrated failures are more like cultists than Trump backers. And labeling them as cultists will only service to drive more of them to the polls in the next two elections."

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:  MUTUAL CONVERSATION

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”  Psalm 27:1

“He is always with you; whether you are awake or asleep, you have faith in your heart; wherever you go, He is present; He speaks with you & you with Him, & there is mutual conversation between him & you. He speaks with you like a good friend, & you in turn praise, proclaim, & call upon Him.”  Martin Luther Psalm by Psalm, Concordia Publishing House, 2017.
