Truth for Children (Don't be offended!)

Walking in the Truth

Scripture reading:  "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." 3rd John v. 4.

It's time to start taking a look at Bible passages that talk about truth. Here is something to keep in mind. It will be very important to know what we mean by the word "truth."

  • There is a dictionary definition of truth.
  • There is a (somewhat) commonly understood, if vaguely, concept of truth that our culture too easily embraces.
  • And then there is God's Truth.
Once we have a handle on that, it will make it much easier to understand what St. John meant when he wrote, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." Hopefully, you are not offended by being addressed as "children." You may be young men & women. You may be, well, you may be more like my age. Hopefully, you will not be offended by being addressed as children, because that's the term used by St. John.

St. John's definition of "children" is all God's sons & daughters, all who have been called into God's family. That would include the tiniest baptized baby. That would include someone as old as, well, we'll leave it at that . . . for now.

Oh, yeah, it's important for you to know one more thing about me. In order to know where I'm coming from in these devotions, you need to know that I believe the following:  the Bible is the inspired Word of God. There, I said it. We can argue about the details as we roll along.

Prayer thought:  Ask for the Holy Spirit's blessing as we study Holy Scripture together, that we may grow in our understanding of God's Truth, grow in our understanding of what it means to walk in God's Truth, & put into practice walking in God's Truth. It will be an adventure!
