Whimsical Wednesday

Cockroaches + Bash Update + Volcanoes + Thoughts for Today

I "graduate" from cardiac rehab today:  18 sessions, 3 per week for 6 weeks. Beginning MON I can start a free month of maintenance, which means the same exercise machines, blood pressure & blood sugar tests, but no more cardiac monitor. I was told yesterday that although there will be no cake, I will be valedictorian. There are no other graduates today, but I've never been a valedictorian before.

Wednesday Whimsy

From Omaha World Herald (5/7):  "Woman had a cockroach inside her ear for 9 days . . . "
COMMENT:  Given the size of cockroaches in Hawaii, had any of us fallen victim like this poor woman, it would have taken a tow truck to remove the nefarious beast.

Hill Sisters Bash Summer 2018 Countdown

According to my calculations, there are 62 days until we officially kick-off the Summer 2018 Bash @ David & Carmen's Chalet on beautiful Little Island Lake near Nevis, MN. That's 62 days to start stocking up on red wine & fou-fou coffee.

Dept. of Shameless Joke-Stealing

From Reader's Digest 'Life in These United States' (May 2018):  "Things I overheard at my health club.
  • "I'm only taking this class so I don't eat for an hour.
  • "Who knew 40 years of neglect would have repercussions?
  • "Does this body make me look fat?"

There Is No Place Like . . . Hawaii

From OWH (5/5):  "Bubbling lava displaces Hawaiians. Ash rises from the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island on THU, & the volcano was still erupting FRI. More than 1,700 residents were ordered to evacuate from their volcano-side homes after the volcano sent molten lava through forest land & bubbling up on paved streets. More than 100 people spent THU night in shelters. Resident Jeremiah Osuna described the scene as a 'curtain of fire.' Small earthquakes earlier this week telegraphed the eruption." COMMENT:  Lois & I got to visit Volcanoes National Park in 1996. At that time you could take a boardwalk right up to the edge of the Kilauea caldera, which was a smaller caldera inside of a huge caldera. Also memorable:

  • a drive along a change of previous calderas & signs of their eruption. This included roads that had been closed because of previous lava flows."
  • A lava tube
  • Sulphur vents

Wit & Wisdom of Cal Thomas

From 'Shocking but not all that surprising' column in Norfolk Daily News (12/1/17):  " . . . After having tolerated sexual predators in their midst for decades, Hollywood is taking steps to address the issue. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced it will be establishing a code of conduct for its members. One hopes it will have teeth & that violators 'will never work in this town again.'
The entertainment industry needs to go further. While there was much to criticize about the sometimes prudish & hypocritical Motion Picture Production Code that forced actors to keep their clothes on & avoid foul language in films produced from 1930 to 1968, it could be said that films then were mostly not complicit in the lowering of moral standards. That would come later with TV, which began pushing against FCC regulations, & then cable & satellite TV, which have no FCC restrictions. Hollywood responded to their loss of audience by 'going low' to lure people back into theaters . . . "

Thought for Today

CHILDREN

“Children are a heritage from the Lord.” Ps. 127:3

“ . . . children are an inheritance parents are passing on to the future. We all pray & work in hope that what we did as parents by God’s grace may continue in & through our children.” At the Crossroads: Devotions for Lent, by David Kehret, Creative Communications for the Parish, 2016.
