Bear

HIP & NECK

I got 9,710 steps yesterday--a new PR! Sadly, I hoped to get in a nice, long walk this morning, but I was only able to garner 3,154 steps. Because I slept-in & took Brianna to pick up her car from the shop, I waited too long to get started. It was already 85 degrees [felt like 87], & my neck was really bothering me. I've had a flare-up of the DJD in my neck, which--despite yesterday's PR, which was probably a fluke--has really hampered my walking. Looks like another round of PT for me.

MY HOBBIES

I realize that my prattling may seem tedious, but bear in mind that it's my blog, & it serves as a journal to help me cope with my anxiety & depression. Contrary to popular belief, I do have several hobbies. I've been trying to walk more to help with rehabbing my hip. I read a lot. [More on that later.] I collect hotel shampoo, conditioner, & soap, which has gotten more challenging, since more hotels are not providing these luxuries. Sadly, I haven't fished at all this year. My favorite bass pond is overgrown with weeds, & we didn't make our annual trip to David & Carmen's chalet on Little Island Lake near Park Rapids, MN.

WHAT I'M READING

I finished reading "Doc," a fictionalized biography of Doc Holliday by Mary Russell. It really didn't focus on his role in the shootout at the OK corral. It focused more on his time in Dodge City, his life up to that point, his TB, & his growing friendship with the Earps. Now I'm reading "Where Men Win Glory:  The Odyssey of Pat Tillman" by Jon Krakauer, one of my favorite authors.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

Lois & I are continuing our quest to watch all the Avenger movies in chronological order. Last night we watched "Ant Man." When Brianna's not here, we watch "Star Trek Discovery."

THE BIRTHPLACE OF JESUS

Micah 5:2.  “O Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are but a small Judean village yet you will be the birthplace of My King who is alive from everlasting ages past!” The Living Bible

THE ROADSIDE GUTTER

"The message is gripping:  Show a man his failures without Jesus, & the result will be found in the roadside gutter. Give a man religion without reminding him of his filth, & the result will be arrogance in a three-piece suit. But get the two in the same heart--get sin to meet Savior & Savior to meet sin--& the result just might be another Pharisee turned preacher who sets the world on fire." Max Lucado, Men's Devotional Bible

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?

"And who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10:29) "God calls you to love all people who are in need. Anyone you encounter in your vocations who is in need is your neighbor. Thank goodness that Jesus is not picky about whom He chooses to be His neighbor. Thank goodness that Jesus is not selective about whom He loves . . . But because of His great love for you--& this entire world--Jesus could not pass you by. Jesus could not avoid Calvary's cross. Indeed, the Son of God could not avoid the cross & died for all of humanity because He has a gut-wrenching compassion for humanity, for you. He bled, died, & rose for you because you are indeed His neighbor." Matthew Richard, Minute Messages

SHOWING MERCY

"Show mercy to others, even though you are afraid that you might be stained by their sinful lives. God can guard you so that you don't fall." (Jude 23-24) "Mercy can't be afraid of getting dirty. When you reach out to help those who are hurting & have turned their backs on God, you can't be afraid of getting a little messy . . . Mercy demonstrates a desire to show others the God who saves. How will they know if they haven't heard? How will they hear if you don't speak up? Mercy requires fearlessness. Mercy's target is misery--the misery of those who suffer because they don't know God or understand his love. Because of this darkness of their soul, they don't understand what they are doing; they don't know the depths of their sin. Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Show them mercy, because they are in misery.

"When people insult you, gossip about you, or otherwise prove their distance from the Father, as a God Guy you should have mercy on them, for their soul is in distress. You should find ways to serve, rather than to criticize. Your trademark reaction should always be showing mercy & compassion to those who are weaker than you. 'God can guard you so that you don't fall & so that you can be full of joy' (Jude 24), but you must put all your hope in Him & turn all your thoughts onto Him. Never focus so much on other people's misery that you take your eyes off of God. Obey Him, love them, show them mercy & compassion, pray for them, but never fear them & never turn your back in indifference or hate." Michael DiMarco, Devotions for the God Guy

SUFFERING

"Suffering is a constant, so it is a continual duty of the God Guy to suffer. But you are to suffer not as a nonbeliever but as a believer, with the confidence that suffering produces something holy within you. That suffering should never be in vain but should be used for good, for character building, for strength, for perseverance, & for the development of trust . . .

"Don't allow the rough parts of life to convince you that God is absent when they ought to convince you that He is present--shaping you, guiding you, purifying . you. Never let the opportunity of suffering to go unused Instead let it do its work within you so that you will be mature & complete, not lacking anything. (See James 1:2-4.)" Devotions for the God Guy

THE OFFICE OF THE PASTORAL MINISTRY

"The point is this:  The Office of the Pastoral Ministry is foundational in the faith & life of God's people. Through this office--through the voice & ministry of the pastor on behalf of Christ--the Holy Spirit works faith in His people through the preached Word & the Holy Sacraments. The pastor serves as the steward of this Word & these Sacraments He is formed, called, & ordained into this Christly office to impart this saving faith through preaching, teaching, feeding the Lord's Super, baptizing & serving God's people with faithful pastoral care. Christians need pastors, & our Lord supplies them through His church for the saving faith of His people. The pastor teaches God's Word to God's people. Through the ministry of the pastor, God forms His people in the Word to understand it, believer it & live it, including parents, commissioned church workers & pious laypersons." James Baneck, The Lutheran Witness, Aug 2021. I have a confession to make. I have not always spoken highly & respectfully of pastors. Despite some of the bad experiences Lois & I have had with pastors, I sincerely regret my bad attitude & harsh words. We have had pastors who are & continue to be good friends & mentors, & for that I give thanks to God. We are also facing a severe shortage of men & women to enter the ministry, & I also pray that God would raise up men & women to serve as ordained & commissioned ministers to His people.

RETURN TO THE LORD

Joel 2:12-13. “That is why the Lord says, ‘Turn to Me now, while there is time. Give Me all your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, mourning. Let your remorse tear at your heart & not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious & merciful. He is not easily angered; He is full of kindness & anxious not to punish you.” The Living Bible

RUNNING THE RACE

"The way in which we measure our standard of living indicates the race we have decided to run. The American Christian faces a true dilemma. We can choose the rat race, or we can choose to not love this world & 'throw over everything that hinders & the sin that so easily entangles, & . . . . run with perseverance the race marked out for us' (Heb. 12:1)." Patrick Morley, Men's Devotional Bible

GOOD DAYS & BAD DAYS

"Whoever obeys what Christ says is the kind of person in whom God's love is perfected. That's how we know we are in Christ." (1 John 2:5) "In the life of faith you are going to have good days & bad days, mountain peak days & dry old desert days. You can't let either one of them become your obsession. Don't worry & fret over how you feel; just do what's gotta be done. When you are a God Guy, your best example of how to live is how Jesus lived."  Michael DiMarco, Devotions for the God Guy

GETTING WHAT WE WANT

"We are confident that God listens to us if we ask for anything that has His approval." (1 John 5:14) "If you aren't getting wha you want, maybe it's time to look at your wants & needs. Why do you want what you want? And how might that not be what you need right now? When God says no, it's because no is the best answer for you in this situation. Discover why. Ask yourself what getting what you want would do to your faith, your emotions, & your self-control. Then ask yourself what not getting it can do for all of those things. For the God Guy, getting God's best is always best." Devotions for the God Guy

KNOWING WHAT IS TRUE LOVE

"From the beginning we were commanded to love each other. Love means that we live by doing what He commands. We were commanded to live in love, & you have heard this from the beginning." (2 John 5-6) "Love isn't a gushy feeling that you get from your feelings or your hormones. It's not the feeling of contentment you get when you are with someone who loves you back. According to God's Word, it's something totally different:  it's doing what God tells you to do . . . Love calls you out of yourself & into a life of caring & concern for others. You have to get this idea. You can't love the way the world loves & call it good. you have to look at God's Word for the whole truth about love & know what it means for how you treat others." Devotions for the God Guy

GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN

"Going against the grain & doing what God wants you to do not only proves you believe but also increases your faith. Each time you risk disobeying the world by doing what is right, your faith grows." Devotions for the God Guy

OVERCOMING PERSECUTION

"Against this scandal of judgment or persecution of the world, Christ gives this comfort:  they should know that by His divine power & strength He will maintain His preaching & preserve His Church against the wrath & raging of the world & the devil. Then the devil with his kingdom, being conquered by Him, will have to yield to Him & must not carry out against His Church what he wants according to his fierce, furious wrath & hatred. For that reason, even though the Christians must suffer from the devil & the world because of this preaching, this Word shall nevertheless not be overthrown but shall finally be victorious & hold its ground & make it plain before all the world that their verdict against the Gospel is unfair . . . The reason is that this King Christ by His going to the Father has already overcome both the world & the devil. He now sends the announcement that He is the Lord over all & has the power & might to condemn & to punish with eternal hellfire whatever opposes Him, together with the devil & his angels." A Year in the Gospels with Martin Luther

TODAY'S HYMN

Son of God, Eternal Savior (LSB #842)

Son of God, eternal Savior, Source of life & truth & grace, Word made flesh, whose birth among us Hallows all our human race, You our Head, who, throned in glory, For Your own will ever plead:  Fill us with Your love & pity, Heal our wrongs, & help our need.

As You, Lord, have lived for others, So may we for others live. Freely have Your gifts been granted; Freely may Your servants give. Yours the gold & Yours the silver, yours the wealth of land & sea; We but stewards of Your bounty Held in solemn trust will be.

Come, O Christ, & reign among us, King of love & Prince of Peace; Hush the storm of strife & passion, Bid its cruel discords cease. By Your patient years of toiling, By Your silent hours of pain, Quench our fevered thirst of pleasure, Stem our selfish greed of gain.

Son of God, eternal Savior, Source of life & truth & grace, Word made flesh, whose birth among us Hallows all our human race:  By Your praying, by Your willing That Your people should be one, Grant, O grant our hope's fruition:  here on earth Your will be done.

YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT I THINK?

President Biden's action to forgive student debt is wrong on so many levels.

* I'm supposed to pay $2,000 so that students who voluntarily took out student loans in order to obtain frivolous degrees [gender studies?] should be subsidized?

* I'm supposed to pay $2,000 so that students who used their student loans for other things besides tuition should be subsidized?

* Students & parents who worked hard & sacrificed much to pay off their loans should be made to feel foolish for doing the right thing?

* Colleges & universities should be rewarded for encouraging students to take out loans, only to increase the cost of tuition?

Am I the only one who considers this to be a travesty?

"Biden student loan handout gives up to $20k to lawyers, doctors set to make hundreds of thousands of dollars." Fox News Online, 8/25

More debts Biden is cancelling, according to Babylon Bee

> All casino debt.

> Whatever you still owe on your iPhone 13.

> All your old Kohl's cash that expired.

> Your $458,000 hospital bill just to get your temperature checked.

> All the money you spent on DoorDash during the pandemic.

> The U.S. National Debt. (Unfortunately, China might have something to say about that.

WHAT MODERATE DEMOCRATS THINK

"Several moderate Democrats have criticized President Biden’s executive action that will “forgive” up to $10,000 in student debt for Americans making less than $125,000 per year and up to $20,000 for those who previously received a Pell Grant by transferring the debt to American taxpayers. Representative Jared Golden of Maine called the order “out of touch with what the majority of the American people want from the White House, which is leadership to address the most immediate challenges the country is facing.” Representative Tim Ryan, who is running for Senate in Ohio against J.D. Vance, warned the move could alienate Ohioans without a degree." Brittany Bernstein, National Review Online 8/25

BIDEN WANTS UNITY?

"On the menu today: There’s no sugarcoating it — President Biden just unilaterally decided to make taxpayers pick up the at-minimum $300 billion bill for unpaid student loans, a move that nearly 60 percent of Americans think will make inflation worse. Even a former Obama administration official characterizes it as “pouring roughly half [a] trillion dollars of gasoline on the inflationary fire.” But what’s so particularly galling is that this comes from a president who couldn’t stop telling us how much he was determined to unite us and end our angry divisions.

"I’m getting awfully sick and tired of political leaders telling us how much they want to unite the country, and then jamming through their unpopular agenda items by any means necessary. You can’t give grandiose speeches about how your preeminent priority is to bring Americans together, and then by executive order decide that taxpayers will be on the hook for $300 billion in unpaid student loans — a sum that comes out to about $2,000 per taxpayer — by invoking a post-9/11 law that allows for debt cancelation “in connection with a war or other military operation or national emergency.” This is a grotesque abuse of the authority of the executive branch; if the law stands, it will only be because the Supreme Court can’t decide who has the legal standing to challenge the decision." Jim Geraghty, NRO 8/25

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG

"After about a year and a half of online harassment from the sliver of the population for whom this policy is beneficial, Biden has allowed himself to be bullied into violating the Constitution on their behalf. Even Nancy Pelosi has said the president doesn’t have the power to forgive student debt. His staff, which collectively owes millions in student debt, will no doubt be happy. But the presidency is the one office for which the entire country votes, and for it to be captured by a progressive fringe is a travesty.

“Student loan relief” — again, not really. “Relief” implies the disappearance of a malady, but this is merely a transference. Biden’s student-loan plan will cost about $2,000 per taxpayer. It completely erases the purported (and exaggerated) deficit reduction of the reconciliation bill Biden signed just over a week ago.

"Biden is effectively telling all the people who didn’t go to college, those who went to college but didn’t borrow money, and those who went to college and already paid off their loans that they are suckers. The lucky few who just so happen to have student debt at this arbitrary moment get a windfall at the expense of everyone else." The Editors, NRO 8/25

DEBACLE

"It’s hard to top President Joe Biden’s Afghan withdrawal for reckless policy-making, but his student-loan-forgivenessscheme is a contender for his second-worst decision. Based merely on his say-so, with no credible congressional authorization, Biden is going to forgive $10,000 in student debt for individuals with incomes below $125,000 or household incomes below $250,000. Those who received a Pell Grant are eligible for $20,000 in relief.

"Forgiveness is a sop to a narrow class of people. It is unfair to people who haven’t gone to college, predominantly lower income. It is unfair to people who did go to college and didn’t take on loans. It is unfair to people — not realizing that their loans might go away if they held out long enough — who foolishly repaid their loans. It is unfair to people who will take a loan the day after the forgiveness goes into effect. In short, the loan forgiveness is an arbitrary giveaway in a country where fewer than 40 percent of people have a four-year college degree." Rich Lowry, National Review Online

TRULY DEPLORABLE

"President Joe Biden's new plan to "cancel" up to $10,000 in student loan debt for those making less than $125,000 annually is at once a dereliction of constitutional duty, a crass political gambit in the lead-up to a contested midterm election and a morally perverse value judgment that lavishes The Regime's insular, well-heeled voting base at the expense of the median middle-class American. It is, to borrow a term in vogue in Democratic Party circles these days, a truly "deplorable" act." Josh Hammer, Townhall

AN ABUSE OF POWER

"No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law." That's what it says right there in the Constitution. And yet, without any legislation, President Joe Biden now promises to "cancel" up to $10,000 in student loans per borrower ($20,000 for Pell Grant borrowers), limited to those with annual incomes of less than $125,000.

"Let's start by pointing out that Biden isn't "canceling" or "forgiving" any student loans. Those are preposterous euphemisms favored by Democrats and the media. The debt in question already exists, it has been lent and spent, and those who borrowed the money of their own volition have already received services. This debt isn't cancelable . . .

"Now, of course, even if the student loan "forgiveness" was a boon for the poor, it would still be completely unconstitutional, a moral hazard, counterproductive and fundamentally unjust. But Biden's plan -- which is going to cost taxpayers around $300 billion, more than all the illusory "savings" that were going to be found in the Inflation Reduction Act -- is little more than a vote-buying scheme for affluent millennials . . .

"Not long ago, Biden admitted he didn't have the authority to "cancel" student loans "by signing with a pen." Now his administration is rationalizing this power grab on the feeble idea that we are in a national emergency over COVID. Part of me suspects that the administration understands that the president can't "forgive" debt, and that the effort will be stymied by any Supreme Court that adheres to the Constitution. Democrats likely see the issue as a cudgel they can use to further delegitimize the Supreme Court and hit Republicans as opposing aid of the "middle class." There is no norm this administration isn't willing to cynically destroy for political power." David Harsanyi, Townhall
