John Havlicek died yesterday. Maybe you, like I, grew up watching the NBA Game of the Week back in the day when that was the only NBA game being televised. When I started watching the NBA, the Celtics still reigned supreme, & John Havlicek was my hero. He never took a play off. He hustled on both ends of the court. He was all about the team & not about himself. He was modest.
He was also an All-Star, & he helped the Celtics win multiple NBA titles. I loved watching him play, & I loved watching the Celtics win. RIP.

"Love Does"

"Bob Goff * has written two New York Times best-selling books: 'Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World' & 'Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks.' Here are a few select excerpts from 'Love does':

  • "I used to be afraid of failing at something that really mattered to me, but now I'm more afraid of succeeding at things that don't matter."
  • "I used to want to fix people, but now I just want to be with them."
  • "Most people need love & acceptance a lot more than they need advice."
  • "God doesn't want failure to shut us down. God didn't make it a three-strikes-and-you're-out sort of thing. It's more about how God helps us dust ourselves off so we can swing for the fences again. And all of this without keeping a meticulous record of our screw-ups."
  • "I used to think God wouldn't talk to me, but now I knew I'm just selective with what I choose to hear."
  • "It has always seemed to me that broken things, just like broken people, get used more; it's probably because God has more pieces to work with."
  • "Love is never stationary. In the end, love doesn't just keep thinking about it or keep planning for it. Simply put:  love does." [Norfolk Daily News, 4/24]

* Bob Goff was the featured speaker at the Norfolk Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on 4/24.
