SEASON AFFECTIVE DISORDER *

"Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression related to changes in seasons. Millions of adults in the U.S. may suffer from SAD, although many may not know they have the condition, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Signs & symptoms may include:

* Feeling listless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day.

* Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed.

* Having problems with sleeping.

* Having appetite changes, including either a crving for foods high in carbohydrtes & overeating, or poor appetite.

* Having difficult concenrating.

* Feeling sluggish or agitated.

* Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty.

Causes:

> Your biological clock or circadian rhythm.

> A drop in serotonin levels.

> A distruption in the balance of your body's level of melatonin.

Risk factors:

* Family history

* Having major depression or bipolar disorder

* Living far from the equator

* Low level of vitamin D

Treatment options:

> Light therapy

> Cognitive behavioral therapy

> Staying active

> Talk to your doctor
