WHAT I'M READING

Yesterday I finished reading "Madhouse at the End of the Earth:  The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night," by Julian Sancton. I really enjoyed it; it was hard to put down. It's a harrowing tale, & I heartily recommend it. I started reading "Franklin & Winston:  An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship," on Kindle. According to the New York Times, it's "the most complete portrait ever drawn of the complex emotional connection between two of history's towering leaders." Well, if the NYTs recommends it, it must be awesome, right?

AMERICAN FLAG

"The prisoners of Auschwitz understood it; the freedom fights in Hungary & Poland & Czechoslovakia understood it; South Korean patriots understood it; the Kurds understood it. For generations, the Stars & Stripes has been a symbol of liberty to all those across the planet who dissent from totalitarianism. Which is why it is so striking that while foreign dissidents risk their very lives for their liberty to carry the American flag, American citizens who live in the freest, most prosperous, most racially tolerant nation in world history kneel for the flag, or burn the flag, or turn their backs on the flag don't? That totalitarianism is far more common throughout the world, & throughout world history, than freedom; that individual rights may be universal, but they only manifest when those with the courage of their convictions fight for them; that in a world of darkness & chaos, America--for all its flaws, both historic & present--has been & remains a force for good." Ben Shapiro, Norfolk Daily News, 7/28

CITIZENSHIP

"Becoming an American should not be easy, and it should not be open to anyone who wants it. As far as Abrahamian [a writer for the NYT] goes, we already manufacture enough left-wing, American-hating lunatics domestically, we don’t need to import anymore. Derek Hunter, Townhall 8/1

GET LOW

"It has been a very difficult season for conservative Christians in America. There have been countless scandals, both minor and major, sexual and financial, rocking all different sectors of the church. There have been prominent leaders who have renounced their faith. There have been well-publicized, failed prophecies about Trump’s reelection. The list goes on and on, and we have egg on our face. Lots of it. And what about the extreme politicization of so many Christians in the last 5 years, to the point that some of us became better known for our support of a political leader than for our allegiance to Jesus? This is a time of humiliation, of confusion, of dishonor, a time to get low before the Lord rather than a time to strut." Michael Brown, Townhall 8/2

DEPT. OF SHAMELESS JOKE-STEALING

"Oscar Mayer is seeking new drivers for its famous 'Weinermobile.' They're looking for recent college graduates to take on the one-year paid job crisscrossing the country in the iconic 27-foot-long, hot dog-shaped vehicle. Because nothings says 'thank you, mom & dad, for working your entire lives so I could get a BA in musical theater' quite like spending a year driving a beef-stick limousine." Stephen Colbert, NDN Entertainment Spotlight, latelaughs, 7/31-8/6
