Theological Thursday

SILENCE
"Paying attention in silence is not simply for the sake of listening to the oft—unheard sounds around us nor is it exclusively ascetically-motivated sensory deprivation. Instead, it is the tuning of hearts and minds to attend to sounds that truly matter. For the Christian, prayerful listening is the opportunity to attune our hearts to the voice of God. Indeed, a silent heart is often the only fitting response to the overwhelming holiness of God’s presence. As the ancient prophet wrote: But the Lord is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him."  Margaret Manning Shull, Slice of Infinity

ERROR
"There is scarcely an error in doctrine or failure in applying Christian ethics that cannot be traced finally to imperfect & ignoble thoughts about God."  A.W. Tozer, Men's Devotional Bible

WORDS
"Words are far from uncommon in our lives. Yet the use of those words, the intent of those words & the effect of those words are a varied as our situations & our ideas. In the morass of our changing & changeable lives, the church speaks eternally true words, because faith comes from hearing these true words of Christ."  Kevin Armbrust, The Lutheran Witness, February 2020
